Now that’s my kind of museum!
Have you heard about the McCormick Tribune Foundation’s Freedom Museum?
It’s located in Chicago IL, and it opened last week, on Tuesday April 11th. As the website suggests, it’s "the first museum in the United States dedicated to freedom and the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. It inspires generations to understand, value and protect freedom. Through interactive exploration, visitors gain a greater understanding of the struggle for freedom in the United States and the role the First Amendment plays in our daily lives."
Wow. Doesn’t that just ROCK? A museum dedicated to freedom. As an individual strongly leaning towards the libertarian side, I find this über-cool. I really wish I could go, but I’m afraid Chicago’s kind of too far. From what I’ve seen of the museum on CNN, it really kicks ass. And it’s got a very modern look.
And the various exhibitions announced on the website sound great! And you can even get a glimpse of it all online, as they’ve got some "Web exhibitions". Head over to http://www.freedommuseum.us.
I really wish this museum a long and prolific life. And I hope I can visit someday.

What rocks even more is that the McCormick in question is Colonel Robert McCormick, for whom a young Brian Mulroney regularly sang in Baie Comeau.

Joan,
You’re right. I didn’t make the connection, but it all comes back to me now. Robert R. McCormick founded the city of Baie-Comeau, in 1936. I learned that in primary school when I used to live there (from 1991 to 1995). There’s a school named after him in the city. This is just too cool. As Wikipedia puts it: “[Brian] Mulroney would frequently tell stories about publisher Robert R. McCormick, whose company had founded Baie-Comeau. Mulroney would sing Irish songs for McCormick, and the publisher would slip him $50 (Which, as is rarely pointed out, went to the family’s grocery funds).”
Thanks for the heads-up!
